'Laras' is an Indonesian word that means 'sweet sounding' and 'Ethno' is an English pseudonym for 'ethnic'. Together, 'Laras Ethno' means ' Sweet Ethnic Sounds' or to phrase it artistically, 'Eclectic Melodious Mix'. The team behind Laras Ethno bring their own qualities, timbres and passions to their work in media/arts and education.
LE began its life in 2002 as sole proprietorship and officially incorporated in 2004. In its early days the company specialised in event management and enrichment workshops based around ethnographic music. Today Laras Ethno has extended its reach into media management, production services and education whilst remaining a key player of indigenous and cross-cultural musical performances and events, both in Singapore and abroad.
LE is supplier of various world music instruments, from gamelan to drums. Since its inception the company has been commissioned by various organisations, such as iTheatre , ACT3 International, The ArtsHouse and Esplanade Theatres on the Bay to produce fusion-music works for major public events.
The company works closely with muscians and creative team members of Gamelan Asmaradana Ltd.
